There are several things you should know about me.
I love happy endings.
I love stories of suspense.
I get anxiety waiting to see if a story of suspense will end happily.
Yes. I am one of “those” people who will fast forward to the end of the movie (occasionally) or flip through to the end of a book (frequently). I anxiously watched the Passion of the Christ, fully knowing how it would end – He rises. Get the picture??
Now. Imagine my thoughts and emotions as I began reading Messy Beautiful Love by author Darlene Schacht of Time Warp Wife. On page 3 she begins by telling her story of infidelity. My heart grieved for her as she graciously, and with “painful honesty” described how her “house of cards” came tumbling down as her husband revealed his knowledge of her affair (on his birthday). How would their marriage survive such as traumatic blow? Did it? How would her family survive? How would she survive?
But then I remembered the dedication page. On it she has written:
“To Michael, you have shown me the beauty of true and lasting love.”
These words speak volumes. And then, I knew. I will be reading a “story” of suspense that will end happily, yet a story that is still being written. Darlene writes “When I started exchanging God’s ideas for mine, I realized that a beautiful marriage is not only possible; it’s inevitable. That’s something to be excited about! That’s what this book is about: exchanging God’s ideas for ours and tuning out the world so that we might quietly tune in to Him.”
We celebrated 7 years of marriage this year – the one people say gives you the “itch”. Darlene has already walked thru some of the difficulty of life, and is using it to encourage other wives. By God’s grace I want to learn from her life lessons to avoid that “itch”, by learning to thrive in the messiness of marriage as well as in the beauty of it. Will you join me?
