I turned 40 last year. And I must say, it caught me off guard. See, in my 30s I often said things like, “In my 40s I’m going to…” “When I turn 40, I’m changing my look.” “I’m going to cut and color my hair” “Shopping spree to switch things up a bit.” “Watch, when I hit 40, Hawaii, here I come.” “When 40 comes…”
Then, I turned 40. And, at 40 I had 9 month old still nursing twins, and a 3 year old. I did well getting showers in multiple times a week. My plans for a reworked fabulous wardrobe, gave way to the practical – T-shirts, jeans, and the ‘love ’em or hate ’em’ yoga pants (I once hated them, now, I love them). My practical self refused to buy cute clothing that would be spit up on, pooped on, peed on, used as a drawing tablet, chalkboard, napkin or better yet, a Kleenex. And, honestly I was absolutely fine with it. It was a cost of having these wonderful little people in my life. Simply part of having the awesome responsibility and privilege of mothering children I never thought I would have. This is life. And, life happens in seasons. That was then…
But, this is now.
And now, the children are a little bit older.
Now, hubby and I are ready (more than ready) to go out on “real” leave the house, dress up dates.
Now, we finally have enough energy to change into something other than pajamas at 6:30pm.
Now, I am ready to kick this list the curb (well at least when I am with him).
Now, Mama’s got a new groove…
And perfect timing, too.
My friend Brandi (Mama Knows It All, told me about a Mother’s Day makeover contest that was being hosted by Audrey McClelland (Mom Generations, and recommended I apply, submitting a brief essay on why I felt I needed or deserved the makeover, and a few pics.
My first thought was, “Fun!” Followed quickly by, “Wait. Is she saying I need a makeover?” ☺️
Nevertheless, after hemming and hawing and talking myself out of it (“I won’t win”) and into it again (“But, it’s worth a try. What’s the worse that could happen?”). I applied and…
I won.
That’s right. I won.
This right here is on the top of my list of things I thought I’d never do. Never thought I would apply for a makeover, let alone win one. Never thought I would be on a set doing photo shoots ever again (I did that as a child..that’s another story, for another day). Never thought I would have people fussing over my hair and makeup beyond my wedding day (Michael and Garrett were fabulous). And definitely never thought that the company hosting the makeover would be Sears. Yes. Sears. My first thought was “Wait. My grandmother shops at Sears.”
But, this ain’t my Bigmama’s Sears.
What is the first thing you think of when you think Sears? Right.
Apparently, one of the things Sears is striving to do is to change that image. And, it is working. The clothing line they selected my pieces from is called Metaphor. I discovered colors I would never have tried. Learned current fashion trends that I did not know existed. Rediscovered my legs, and high heels that are ‘fyre’. Rekindled my love for accessories – purses, jewelry. At. Sears.
Looks like Mama’s not the only one with new groove.
Many thanks to Sears, Audrey and the entire team it took to pull this all together!!
